Welcome to the website of the German Embassy in Ireland.

Germany and Ireland are linked by a lively, diverse partnership that has grown over time, with roots stretching back to the seventh century, when Irish monks not only brought their religion to Central Europe, but also gave lasting impetus to culture, education, and the arts. The intellectual and cultural exchange that has continued ever since shapes our relations to this day – politically, economically, culturally and socially.

Economic relations are a cornerstone of our cooperation. Germany is Ireland's third largest trading partner and the most important within the European Union. Bilateral trade volume amounted to over €30 billion in 2024. Significant mutual investments have a lasting impact on economic relations.

Politically, Germany and Ireland are close partners in the European Union, standing for democracy, human rights, international law, and a rules-based international order. Together, we are committed to peace, security, and sustainable prosperity, including within the framework of the United Nations.

These relations are sustained not least by close interpersonal contacts, lively town twinning arrangements, and intensive cultural and tourist exchanges, as well as by the tens of thousands of Germans and Irish who live in each other's countries, travel back and forth, and help shape their new home. Important anchors of these relations are the German institutions in Ireland, such as the Goethe-Institut Irland, the German School, the DAAD lecturers, and the German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Together with my embassy team, I will work to further strengthen German-Irish relations so that we, as Europeans, can face the geopolitical challenges of our time in a united and effective manner.

We hope you will find the information you are looking for on our website. We welcome your feedback and suggestions and look forward to meeting you in person in this wonderful country.

With warm regards

David Gill
